BASF's Styropor EPS used in innovative application for radiant heating industry- Helps keeps heat rising

Creatherm “walk-it-in” radiant floor panels provide an efficient thermal and sound barrier between the ground and heated slab while saving contractors time and money.

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, – Until now, installing radiant heating has been a time consuming and labor intensive process for contractors. Home and building owners benefit from radiant heating because it is a clean, comfortable and energy efficient solution. Creatherm™ radiant floor panels, manufactured by Creatherm out of BASF Styropor® EPS, offer contractors an innovative foam installation process that saves time and money.

As with Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs), Creatherm™ radiant floor panels are easily installed. Interlocking panels help reduce labor costs and improve installation efficiencies by allowing for precise tube layout that eliminates the need to tie, clip, staple, or screw the PEX [cross-linked polyethylene] tubing to the substrate.

Styropor®, an expandable polystyrene (EPS) was invented by BASF in 1952 and today is a classic among the raw materials employed for cost-effective construction, as well as efficient and reliable packaging. The most important properties of Styropor® EPS include:

excellent thermal insulation capacity

Extreme Makeover in Kokomo, IN Adds Wind Turbine

‘Extreme Makeover' includes turbine
Firm giving it to TV show for Kokomo home has office here.

By Aaron Organ of The News-Sentinel
When TV host Ty Pennington calls for a driver to “move that bus” Tuesday in Kokomo for the latest episode of ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” not only will a nearly 4,000-square-foot dream home appear for one lucky family, but the residence will also be powered by a wind turbine built by a South Bend company with local ties.Wind-Wire, which has an office in Fort Wayne, will erect a Windstream 3.7 wind turbine on the lot of the home that is engineered to supply enough energy for a 2,000 square-foot home. The $16,200 donation is scheduled to be installed Sunday or Monday, right about the time Pennington is bellowing deadlines to a crowd of on-site volunteers.Wind-Wire got involved in the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” build after company co-owner Dave Smith called the show to offer their services. The show told Smith to contact Hallmark Homes, which was contracted to construct the Kokomo home for the Indiana family in need. After Hallmark executives saw what Wind-Wire had to offer, the rest is history.“We contacted (Hallmark Homes) and they were real skeptical about it, but once we showed them what we did and they saw some of our units, they were all for it,” said Smith. “Matter of fact, they're real excited about it.”The family, which Smith could not identify, was notified of the project Wednesday and promptly sent on vacation, as it customary, while Pennington, his team, hundreds of volunteers and four workers from Wind-Wire get to work for the week. The old home will be demolished today. The new one will be revealed Tuesday. The turbine Smith's company is donating pumps out between 500 and 1,200 kilowatts a month and is entirely dependent on wind; windy months equal more power output. Smith said Skystreams, on average, drop a household electric bill 30 to 80 percent. The turbine will be shipped to the build site from the Wind-Wire plant in La Paz.Smith said the home will be built in a location conducive to wind-powered electricity.“We don't know who the family is, but we're hoping this really helps them out,” said Smith of the turbine. “This will help to eliminate a bunch of their electric.”Smith said Wind-Wire has installed turbines all over the region, from South Bend to Kokomo to Detroit to Chicago. In an economy enveloped in a “green” mentality, Wind-Wire has taken off.“Sure we want a little bit of advertising from it, but you know what? We always wanted to put ourselves in a position where we could do something like this for those families that need it, and we felt this was the perfect way of doing it,” said Smith. “And it feels good.”

EPS Reduces Global Warming

New Life Cycle Analysis Clearly Demonstrates Environmental Contributions of Adding EPS Insulation to North American Homes

CROFTON, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new study shows that expanded polystyrene (EPS) provides a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when used to insulate homes in North America.

This study, Energy and Greenhouse Gas Savings for EPS Foam Insulation Applied to Exterior Walls of Single Family Residential Housing in the U.S. and Canada, calculated the resources used and emissions produced in the manufacturing and delivery of EPS and concludes that EPS insulation will reduce the operational impact of the building to an extent that far outweighs the environmental impact caused by its manufacture.

“Everyone knows that adding insulation to your home will reduce energy costs,” acknowledges Betsy Steiner, executive director of the EPS Molders Association (EPSMA). “However, consumers are increasingly aware that product manufacture requires resource and energy consumption. We want our customers to know that energy and environmental payback on this investment is substantial, making EPS insulation one of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce energy usage.”

With mainstream support for the green movement, consumers are asking new and different questions about how products perform and are increasingly making purchasing decisions that take environmental considerations into account. This is particularly true in the area of construction, as buildings are responsible for 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), a measurement tool that provides comprehensive environmental data, is a widely accepted method of evaluating a product’s environmental footprint.

Franklin Associates, an independent consulting firm in Prairie Village, Kansas, conducted this study to analyze and quantify energy use and emissions with regard to EPS insulation. Franklin used data from the U.S. Life Cycle Index (LCI) Database and data collected from the EPS manufacturing industry. Homes were evaluated in all climate zones in the U.S. and Canada. The thermal performance evaluation of the homes was based on R-value data from Oakridge National Laboratories.

Using this approach, the study assessed the energy and resources used during the extraction, manufacturing, processing, delivery, use and disposal of EPS insulation, and the greenhouse gas emissions produced throughout the process. The energy and greenhouse gas savings were determined by comparing the heating and cooling energy requirements for the modeled home with added EPS insulation to a similar structure without added insulation. This provides the ‘net’ footprint or the environmental payback that is achieved by using increased insulation.

Insulation is measured in terms of thermal resistance, called R-value, which indicates the resistance to heat flow. The higher the material’s R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness or, the better walls and roof resist the flow of heat either into or out of the building. When EPS insulation was added to the exterior walls, using R-4 and R-6 foam, the energy payback periods in Canada are less than one year in all Provinces. In the U.S., the energy payback time for R-4 insulation is less than two years with shorter payback times in colder regions. R-6 payback times for energy are slightly longer but ultimately result in higher energy savings over the life of the building. These energy values directly correlate to the resulting greenhouse gas reductions.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating and cooling account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American home, and inadequate insulation and air leakage are the leading causes of energy waste in most homes.

While ongoing research is aiming to identify renewable energy options, immediate green house gas reductions and efficiencies upgrades can be achieved with added insulation, and most importantly allows homeowners to take action now.

“The exceptional performance of EPS insulation offers the construction industry a means to achieve newer energy efficiency goals being revised and updated on an ongoing basis,” adds Steiner. “Architects, designers, and material specifiers can be confident they are providing an environmentally responsible choice when selecting EPS to insulate their buildings.”

Going Green with Radiant Floor Heat

With its energy efficiency and clean draft-free heat, concrete radiant floor heating offers numerous environmental benefits.

Here are some of them:

*Less energy required to achieve better thermal comfort at a lower thermostat setting.

*Water has 3,500 times the energy transport capacity of air.

*Adaptable to various energy-efficient heat sources, such as solar and geothermal.
*Improved indoor air quality.

*Radiant systems that use PEX tubing vs. copper pipe expedite hot water delivery and reduce water waste.

*The walls of PEX tubing provide better insulation than copper.

*Reduces building materials required for concealing ductwork and compensating ceiling heights.

*Provides more usable area, which allows for smaller spaces without sacrificing livability.

In-floor radiant heating can also help contribute to green building points under two recently introduced national programs: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Homes (see A National Certification Program for Green Homes) and the National Association of Home Builders Green Building Program.

The Radiant Panel Association worked with NAHB in developing its green home building guidelines, which were released in 2005. The RPA Guidelines for the Installation of Radiant Panel Heating and Snow/Ice Systems (available through the RPA bookstore) is included as a recognized design reference for earning green building points. In addition, builders can earn points for using an RPA-certified technician to install the system.
