Small Iowa City Gets $1M for Geothermal Project
A city of about 2,500 in the northeastern corner of the state, West Union is the county seat of Fayette County. In 2008, West Union was named one of Iowa's two Green Pilot Communities by Iowa's Department of Economic Development.
"This is great news for West Union and our state as a whole," said Governor Culver. "I am committed to making Iowa the renewable energy capital of the country, and these funds are another step forward in meeting that goal."

West Union's planned renovation of six blocks of downtown infrastructure is called West Union Green Pilot Project. The award was made through the Community Development Block Grant's Downtown Revitalization Fund and Community Sustainability program.
The community will replace aging infrastructure such as water, storm and sanitary sewers, streets, sidewalks and lights using environmentally friendly materials.
The city intends to complete a six-block green streetscape including reconstruction of the streets and sidewalks. Porous pavement, rainwater harvesting and reuse, rain gardens and bioswales for stormwater retention will make the project green and sustainable.
Geothermal conduits using heat from deep within the Earth, radiant snow melt infrastructure and energy efficient street lighting will be installed.
The governor says no other community in the country will have integrated as many green infrastructure practices in one place and at one time as West Union, making the community a destination for planners, architects, engineers, and community officials who wish to learn from the West Union model.
The project began with a visioning workshop in October 2007 when the Department of Economic Development completed a technical assistance visit to advise West Union about the potential for multi-purpose pedestrian-scale streetscape improvements.
The next step on the green journey included a Green Pilot Workshop held in June 2008 to brainstorm and research green applications that could be incorporated into the six-block streetscape design.
West Union will receive technical assistance and training as well as financial incentives from IDED to complete the new, environmentally responsible streetscape.
The Iowa Green Streets Criteria will apply to this project. These criteria promote public health, energy efficiency, water conservation, smart locations, operational savings and sustainable building practices.

EPS Reduces Global Warming
CROFTON, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new study shows that expanded polystyrene (EPS) provides a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when used to insulate homes in North America.
This study, Energy and Greenhouse Gas Savings for EPS Foam Insulation Applied to Exterior Walls of Single Family Residential Housing in the U.S. and Canada, calculated the resources used and emissions produced in the manufacturing and delivery of EPS and concludes that EPS insulation will reduce the operational impact of the building to an extent that far outweighs the environmental impact caused by its manufacture.
“Everyone knows that adding insulation to your home will reduce energy costs,” acknowledges Betsy Steiner, executive director of the EPS Molders Association (EPSMA). “However, consumers are increasingly aware that product manufacture requires resource and energy consumption. We want our customers to know that energy and environmental payback on this investment is substantial, making EPS insulation one of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce energy usage.”
With mainstream support for the green movement, consumers are asking new and different questions about how products perform and are increasingly making purchasing decisions that take environmental considerations into account. This is particularly true in the area of construction, as buildings are responsible for 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), a measurement tool that provides comprehensive environmental data, is a widely accepted method of evaluating a product’s environmental footprint.
Franklin Associates, an independent consulting firm in Prairie Village, Kansas, conducted this study to analyze and quantify energy use and emissions with regard to EPS insulation. Franklin used data from the U.S. Life Cycle Index (LCI) Database and data collected from the EPS manufacturing industry. Homes were evaluated in all climate zones in the U.S. and Canada. The thermal performance evaluation of the homes was based on R-value data from Oakridge National Laboratories.
Using this approach, the study assessed the energy and resources used during the extraction, manufacturing, processing, delivery, use and disposal of EPS insulation, and the greenhouse gas emissions produced throughout the process. The energy and greenhouse gas savings were determined by comparing the heating and cooling energy requirements for the modeled home with added EPS insulation to a similar structure without added insulation. This provides the ‘net’ footprint or the environmental payback that is achieved by using increased insulation.
Insulation is measured in terms of thermal resistance, called R-value, which indicates the resistance to heat flow. The higher the material’s R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness or, the better walls and roof resist the flow of heat either into or out of the building. When EPS insulation was added to the exterior walls, using R-4 and R-6 foam, the energy payback periods in Canada are less than one year in all Provinces. In the U.S., the energy payback time for R-4 insulation is less than two years with shorter payback times in colder regions. R-6 payback times for energy are slightly longer but ultimately result in higher energy savings over the life of the building. These energy values directly correlate to the resulting greenhouse gas reductions.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating and cooling account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American home, and inadequate insulation and air leakage are the leading causes of energy waste in most homes.
While ongoing research is aiming to identify renewable energy options, immediate green house gas reductions and efficiencies upgrades can be achieved with added insulation, and most importantly allows homeowners to take action now.
“The exceptional performance of EPS insulation offers the construction industry a means to achieve newer energy efficiency goals being revised and updated on an ongoing basis,” adds Steiner. “Architects, designers, and material specifiers can be confident they are providing an environmentally responsible choice when selecting EPS to insulate their buildings.”

Going Green with Radiant Floor Heat
Here are some of them:
*Less energy required to achieve better thermal comfort at a lower thermostat setting.
*Water has 3,500 times the energy transport capacity of air.
*Adaptable to various energy-efficient heat sources, such as solar and geothermal.
*Radiant systems that use PEX tubing vs. copper pipe expedite hot water delivery and reduce water waste.
*The walls of PEX tubing provide better insulation than copper.
*Reduces building materials required for concealing ductwork and compensating ceiling heights.
*Provides more usable area, which allows for smaller spaces without sacrificing livability.
In-floor radiant heating can also help contribute to green building points under two recently introduced national programs: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Homes (see A National Certification Program for Green Homes) and the National Association of Home Builders Green Building Program.
The Radiant Panel Association worked with NAHB in developing its green home building guidelines, which were released in 2005. The RPA Guidelines for the Installation of Radiant Panel Heating and Snow/Ice Systems (available through the RPA bookstore) is included as a recognized design reference for earning green building points. In addition, builders can earn points for using an RPA-certified technician to install the system.

EPS = Proven Performance
Expanded polystyrene insulation guarantees stable R-Value and increased energy savings.
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation products have been the subject of extensive research and evaluation over a 30-plus year lifespan in a wide variety of building and construction applications.
EPS is a closed-cell, thermal plastic material produced from styrene and pentane that can be engineered to meet the specific requirements of commercial, residential, and civil engineering projects. Building owners and contractors recognize the value of EPS due to its unique physical properties and cost savings.
Another Energy Crisis?
During the 1970s, demand for quality building insulation soared when an oil crisis sent heating and cooling costs skyward. In recent months, this same phenomena demands building owners look for even more energy-efficient insulation products. Offering stable R-value, EPS is made up of 95-percent air, making it an excellent insulating material. It can be produced in a wide range of densities and thick-nesses to provide the physical properties and thermal performance required for an application.
The Institute of Research in Construction, a subdivision of the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, conducted a two-year study, "The Exterior Insulation Basement System" on the performance of EPS in below-grade applications. The results concluded "the key performance factors of thermal conductivity and compressive strength of the EPS specimens were not affected by the 31-month in-situ exposure." In fact, it demonstrated a slight increase in its thermal performance during the second year. This groundbreaking research establishes a new baseline for EPS performance measurements.
Other studies, looking at newer EPS building systems applications like insulated concrete forms (ICFs) and structural insulated panels (SIPs), show increased energy savings over competing materials, up to 25 percent. In a recent test conducted by the Florida Solar Energy Center, Cocoa, FL, a building structure constructed with EPS tested at only 1.8 air changes per hour (ach) vs. 3.9 ach measured for the more antiquated construction type.
Code Advancements
New code developments are also paving the way for increased cost savings when using EPS. Recent fire testing and evaluation reports from some national and state building code authorities make EPS foam insulation even more cost effective when used in steel-deck roofing applications.
The Seymour High School Aquatic Center in Seymour, WI, saved thousand of dollars in roofing construction costs by switching to UL-classified EPS. "We saw an opportunity to save the school district some tax dollars without compromising the safety or performance of the building," says Troy Eick, co-owner of Northeastern Roofing Inc. "Because the Wisconsin building code authority recognized the direct application of polystyrene to steel deck roof assemblies -- without the need for a thermal barrier -- EPS foam was the most cost-effective insulation choice. We were able to save the school district nearly $20,000."
In January 2000, the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) issued evaluation reports approving the use of expanded polystyrene foam plastic insulation for use in roofing systems directly applied to steel roof decks. The Southern Building Code Congress International Inc. (SBCCI) issued similar evaluation reports in 1997.
With ongoing code developments and technological advancements for new uses of expanded polystyrene, its role as a cost-competitive and high-performance insulation material is expected to increase in upcoming years. Growth projections in ICFs and SIPs alone are in the 20 to 25 percentile. With escalating energy costs, it is more important than ever that building owners seek out materials that deliver consistent performance over the life of the building.
Betsy de Campos is executive director of the EPS Molders Association, Crofton, MD, a partner of EPA ENERGY STAR.
Environmental Bonus
Pentane is the blowing agent used in the manufacture of EPS, and is not harmful to the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer. In fact, Green-peace recognizes EPS as a viable and preferred insulation technology. While pentane dissipates over a brief curing time -- within a few days -- hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) remain within the cellular structure of the foam, for possibly five to 10 years or more, according to the Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville, TN, Therefore, the use of HCFCs can cause a significant loss of R-value, estimated at up to 28 percent.

The new panel will be manufactured at existing Creatherm production facilities as well as Aptco, LLC on the West Coast. Customers now have the ability to split orders between the S45 and T45 by bundle quantity.
All Creatherm TM radiant floor panels are manufactured out of BASF Styropor® EPS.
Styropor®, an expandable polystyrene (EPS) was invented by BASF in 1952 and today is a classic among the raw materials employed for cost-effective construction, as well as efficient and reliable packaging. The most important properties of Styropor® EPS include: excellent thermal insulation capacity, high compressive strength, outstanding impact absorption, low weight, and flexible design capabilities.
The foam panels are also quiet, resistant to insects and mold, and virtually allergen free.
Headquarted in Whitestown, Ind., a northwest suburb of Indianapolis, Creatherm TM offers expanded polystyrene foam products to the building industry. Building on a design alliance with Createc Corporation, manufacturers of ICF panels, Creatherm’s Radiant Floor Panels were their first product to reach market.
